What is CMMC? Does CMMC apply to you?
The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) is a framework that measures a contractor's cybersecurity maturity, which in many cases includes the full implementation of cybersecurity practices described in NIST SP 800-171 Rev2 and institutionalization of associated processes.
Depending on the CMMC level required by particular solicitation, it will also require a third-party assessment via an external organization (C3PAO) to validate the full implementation. If you are a DoD contractor or sell products or services to the DoD, then CMMC compliance will be a requirement for you as a prerequisite to getting contracts awarded.
How do you get compliant with CMMC?
To achieve compliance, organizations must first determine their required level based on the sensitivity of the government data they handle, then perform a gap analysis against the CMMC framework. They must develop a System Security Plan (SSP) and associated documentation and processes to address deficiencies. Finally, many must undergo an assessment by Certified Third-Party Assessment Organization (C3PAO) to validate full implementation.
